Camping in Maine

Maine is a beautiful state and if you haven’t camped in Maine, you are really missing out on some of Maine's natural beauty. There are a wide variety of camping options available for you in Maine. There are campgrounds, state parks, and natural areas all available for camping in Maine.

Maine is divided into seven areas or regions. If you look at a map of Maine starting in the South you have an area known as the South Coast. Here's you’ll find most of the beaches and warmer waters. Heading north and west, you'll find the Western Lakes and Mountains region. This is the picture-postcard region full of thick forests and crystal-clear lakes. Travel east in Maine, and you'll find the Kennebec and Moose River Valley region. This region was made famous as the summer resort home for the presidential Bush family. The mid Coast region is further north up the Coast. This region features rocky coastline and dramatic ocean views. The most famous region may be the Down East and Acadia region. Here is where you will find Acadia National Park, one of Maine's most beautiful natural treasures. Sunrise County has the distinction of being the eastern most part of the United States. The sun rises at Sunrise County, Maine before anywhere else in the United States. The Katahdin and Moosehead region of Maine features beautiful lakes and areas home to moose and other wildlife. And Maine's most northernmost region is the Aroostock region. This region is home to Maine’s potato and blueberry farming industry.

Probably the most famous area in Maine for camping has to be Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. This is the second most visited park in the United States. Camping in Maine near Acadia National Park offers many choices. There are campsites for small tents only, family tents, as well as campgrounds that can handle RVs up to 65 feet long. This makes camping in Maine within the reach of anyone.

If you want to camp in Maine and really get back to nature, then you need to visit the Western Lakes region. Rangeley Lake is probably the largest lake in the area and features the most amenities. However camping in this area of Maine, there are campsites so rustic that you can only camp there with a tent. There are however, campgrounds that can handle even the largest travel trailer.
